Photographic Profile
Clare and Keith Laflin are now based in Lincolnshire, having moved there from North Yorkshire where much of their work was undertaken. A quick perusal of gallery headings will reveal that while both produce images drawing inspiration from the British Landscape, Keith has a preference for working in monochrome and retains a darkroom, while Clare tends towards light and colour, creating still life images, often involving floral subjects.
Keith’s love of photography began when he started entering photographic competitions as a young teenager. He began his working life as an industrial chemist involved in research and development with Kodak – hence the reluctance to be separated from the associated chemicals. Work and a growing family put photography into a purely domestic context for some years. However, the last few years have seen photography moving into the foreground with a hobby developing into a passion to capture and recreate exactly the right image for any particular situation. His efforts being recently rewarded with the LRPS he had been encouraged to pursue in his teens! Having held out against digital capture for a long time Keith has now not only changed county but also changed camera and is excitedly coming to terms with the new challenges and opportunities offered through the lens of his digital SLR while retaining film cameras for monochrome work.
Clare’s photography followed a similar course. There was a memorable interview at school following her mention that she would be interested in a career in photography. Her headmistress informed her that she might as well leave if she wanted to do that sort of thing! She agreed to be dissuaded and career and family intervened but never entirely squeezed out the interest in photography which finally took off in the last few years. Several of Clare’s images have been used in greetings cards and many more of both her own and Keith’s work have been published alongside the articles which she has written for various magazines. Clare still has a preference for capturing studio work on transparencies but has moved to a digital SLR for other work.
